Missy Franklin Wins Laureus Sportswoman
KUALA LUMPUR: American swimmer Missy Franklin was awarded the Laureus Sportswoman of the Year at a glittering event at the Istana Budaya here. The 18-year-old rose to prominence at 17 after sweeping four gold medals at the London Olympics in 2012 – 100m and 200m backstroke, 4x200m freestyle and 4×100 medley.
Last year, she amassed six golds in six events at the World Championships in Barcelona, winning the 100m and 200m backstroke, 200m freestyle, 4x100m and 4x200m freestyle, and 4×100 medley. The World Team of the Year award went to German football team Bayern Munich, who just bagged the Bundesliga title in record time on Tuesday, with seven games left in the campaign.
