KUALA LUMPUR, April 4 – A strong earthquake, measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale, occurred near the northern coast of Chile at 9.37 am Friday, the Malaysian Meteorological Department said. It said in a statement that the earthquake’s epicentre was located 47km southwest of Iquique, Chile, and 17,815km southwest of Pontian, Johor. The quake did not pose any tsunami threat, it added. The quake is believed to be an aftershock following a magnitude-8.2 earthquake that struck the same area on April 1, resulting in six people killed. An aftershock of 7.6 magnitude also occurred in the same area yesterday.
