MELAKA, April 16 – The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) has been urged to take stern action against the bus company that employed the driver responsible for the fatal accident at Kilometre 11, Jalan Bentong-Raub on Saturday. Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Ab Aziz Kaprawi said bus companies should make a close scrutiny of their drivers in order to secure the safety and security of passengers. “The passengers’ lives and safety depend on the driver, the buses usually are in good condition but the negligence and weaknesses of drivers cause accidents,” he told reporters after closing the basic course for enforcement officers (Grade N41) and assistant enforcement officers (Grade N17) at the Road Transport Academy here, Wednesday.
He said this when asked to comment by Bentong District Police Chief, Supt Mohamad Mansor Mohamad Nor, regarding the bus driver involved in the accident who tested positive for drugs. In the 12.30 am accident, the transnational double decker express bus carrying 68 people en route from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Baharu reportedly crashed into a power pole and overturned. Those killed in the crash were a couple Saeed Mohamad Mohamud Abdalla, 31, a Somali and Zarifah Alias, 26, from Kota Baharu and Suhaisam Che Abdullah, 33, from Batang Kali, Selangor.
