KUALA LUMPUR, April 18 – A total of 6,864 private homes in Federal Territories are involved in the Household Income Expenditure Survey (HIES) and the Basic Facilities Survey 2014 from January until December. Statistics Department director Tan Keng Chuan said of the total, 5,616 homes are in Kuala Lumpur, 720 homes are in Labuan and 528 homes are in Putrajaya. “The choice of homes was done by sampling experts using recognised statistical methods. Samples from 83,456 households nationwide is enough to represent the true population of the three Federal Territories,” he told reporters, here today. The findings of the surveys will be used to help the government develop the National Development Plan, especially for the preparation of the 11th Malaysia Plan. Tan said the expenditure data is used in the calculation of the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which is a proxy for measuring the rate of inflation in the country. The HIES data is also a basic item in the formation of the Poverty Line Income and to determine the poor and hardcore poor and used as input to analyse income distribution and expenses associated with economic activities.
