KUALA LUMPUR, April 28 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today wishes a happy 80th anniversary to the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN). “The navy has served and sacrificed for the country for eight decades. Happy 80th anniversary to our navy servicemen,” he said in his Twitter account Sunday night. The RMN is a branch of the Malaysian Armed Forces that is responsible for the country’s maritime surveillance and defence. It was established by the British government in 1934 and was called the Malayan Naval Forces to assist in defending the Malayan waters following the political development and unrest in Asia at that time. MNF was later named as the Royal Malayan Navy by Queen Elizabeth II in 1952 for its excellence service during the Emergency before it was officially handed over to the Federation of Malaya government on July 12, 1958. It was renamed as the Royal Malaysian Navy after the formation of Malaysia on Sept 16, 1963.
