BUTTERWORTH, May 1 – The family of a Seberang Perai Municipal Council (MPSP) worker was made homeless after their house in Jalan Mengkuang, was razed in a fire, here Thursday. The victim, Ariffin Ghani, 46, said he suffered losses amounting to about RM40,000 as all his equipment and utensils used for a catering business that he has been doing for the past two years, were destroyed in the fire. “Plates, cups, warmers, table cloth and other equipment were lost in the fire which spread very quickly. However, I am grateful that no one, including my disabled daughter was not injured in the fire,” he told reporters, here today.

Apart from Ariffin’s house, the fire also destroyed a scrap metal shop which was situated next to the house. His neighbour, Ahmad Huzaiban, 36, said the wedding ceremony of his cousin which was scheduled in the morning was forced to be postponed and held at a mosque instead due to the fire. “My house was not affected by the fire but the situation warranted us to shift the wedding to a nearby mosque,” he said. A fire and rescue department officer said after receiving a call about the fire at 9.04am about the incident, fire fighters from Butterworth, Prai and volunteer fire fighters from Sungai Puyu and Bagan Ajam were deployed to the scene. He said the cause of the fire was being investigated.
