MAS Confirms Reps Talking With Family Members Over Advance Compensation

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3 – Malaysia Airlines (MAS) in Saturday confirmed that representatives from its Family Support Centre have been in touch with the next-of-kin of those on board flight MH370 that went missing on March 8 to initiate an advance compensation payment process. MAS said in a statement that this was to assist the family members in meeting their economic needs and it would not jeopardise their right to claim compensation in accordance with the law at a later stage. “It (the advance compensation) will be calculated as part of the final compensation,” said the airline.

According to the statement, matters with regard to compensation remained private and confidential and, as such, MAS reiterated that it would not be discussing any related details publicly, out of respect for the grieving families. Flight MH370, with 239 passengers and crew on board, left the KL International Airport at 12.41 am on March 8 and disappeared from radar screens about an hour later while over the South China Sea.

It was to have arrived in Beijing at 6.30 am on the same day. A multinational search was mounted for the plane, first in the South China Sea and then, after it was learnt that the plane had veered off course, in the southern Indian Ocean. Nothing has been found of the missing Boeing 777-200 aircraft since its disappearance 57 days ago up to today.
