KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 7 – The Penang state government has praised Umno for admitting its mistake in its article about the Voluntary Patrol Squad (PPS) published a few days ago. Yet, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng is insisting that Penang Umno chief Datuk Zainal Abidin apologise, according to Sinar Harian. Although Lim reportedly said he was not angry at the mistake, the DAP secretary-general explained it was only “customary” that the admission was followed by an apology. “This because the accusation was a political attack on me and PPS members. “After being challenged to show proof, only then did Umno confirm there was a mistake,” he was quoted as saying by the news portal.
It was reported yesterday that Lim said his entire government would resign if the state Umno could prove its claim that the PPS was allocated a funding of RM1.5 billion by the government. Lim’s declaration was said to have been made after Zainal allegedly mentioned that sum in an article about the PPS, published on Sept 4 on Umno’s website, Umno-online.my. The same article was also quoted by online portal Malaysiakini in its report on Friday. But Zainal clarified with The Rakyat Post that he never mentioned the amount in “billions” and it was in “millions”, which is evident in the current version of the Umno article which states the amount in “millions”. Lim, however, pointed out that in a printout he had from the first day the article was published, the amount was stated as “billion”, which indicated that the mistake was due to an error when published. According to Sinar Harian, Zainal later admitted that there was an error in the published article.
