KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 24 – Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad today said although Mohamed Azmin Ali had been appointed as Selangor Menteri Besar instead of PKR’s preferred choice, he was still a puppet of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Malaysia’s longest serving prime minister was commenting on the failed attempt by PKR to persuade the Sultan of Selangor to install Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the state MB. “Although it was Azmin who had been appointed instead of Dr Wan Azizah, but he is still a puppet of Anwar,” Dr Mahathir said. “The situation has changed a bit, although Anwar is not as close to Azmin as he is to Dr Wan Azizah, but the remote-control factor still applies.”
Dr Mahathir, however, said Azmin could turn out to be a good leader if he did not bother with orders and instructions from third party but followed his own path. Dr Mahathir said anyone would make a better leader than Anwar, whom he described as a troublemaker. “Wherever Anwar has gone, problems have arose. When he was with Umno, with Pakatan Rakyat, even when he wants to be the menteri besar, there are problems.” Dr Mahathir also pointed out that during his time leading Malaysia, the state royalty had never been forced to overstep their role.
“I always submitted only one candidate, who enjoyed the support of the majority,” he reflected. “But in the Selangor menteri besar impasse, the Selangor monarchy was made to appear as if he had overstepped the line. “It is certain people who caused this to happen,” Dr Mahathir said. “If they had come with a proper nomination, with one person who is fully backed by everyone or majority, then the monarchy would have to accept,” he said, responding to a question on whether there is cause for concern that the Sultan chose his own candidate for the post.
