SUNGAI PETANI, Sept 30 – The concept of continuing the tradition (‘Kamilah Penyambung Warisan’) brought luck to ex-serviceman Najib Rabi, 61, from Kampung Relau, Bandar Baharu, when his house won the individual category of the 2014 Merdeka Celebrations Competition, Kedah stage. Najib said he did not expect that his investment of RM300, together with the support of his wife, Norsiah Yusop, 56, family and local community, would win him the competition at the district level and later, at state level.
“The theme “Here Lies A Love” was used for the Merdeka Day celebrations this year, so we chose the theme “We Continue The Tradition” as a guide to decorate our house. “Besides using the Jalur Gemilang as part of the decor in and outside the house, we also built a replica of the KLCC building, a map of Malaysia, designed a heart from recycled materials, and put up portraits of freedom fighters,” he said. He was speaking to Bernama after the prize-presentation ceremony for winners of the Merdeka Celebrations Competition, here by Kedah Information director, Dr Hanif Hassan.
At the ceremony, Kampung Pering and Taman Desa Damai in Kubang Pasu were declared winners in the village and housing estate category while Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Selasih, Kulim, won in the school category. The Farmers Association in Seri Jerai, Guar Chempedak, Yan and Kulim Inn, Kulim, won in the government building and private sector building categories, while the arch and 1Malaysia community porch categories were won by the Shan Cheng Welfare Organisation in Tanjung Bendahara, Kota Setar, and Anjung Kim Wang Tok Rendong, Langkawi.
