IPOH, Oct 4 – Police in both Perak and Penang are on high alert for any cases involving the hacking of automated teller machines (ATMs). This is in spite of the fact that no such cases have been reported in either of the northern states. Perak police chief Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said instructions had been given to district police headquarters to increase surveillance at banks.
“The Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) has also been instructed to meet financial institutions to ask them to beef up their security,” he said. Acryl Sani said security at the border area of Pengkalan Hulu had been tightened to ensure the suspects — a gang of Latin American men — do not escape the country through Perak. In George Town, CCID chief Assistant Commissioner Azmi Adam said police were prepared should the gang strike in the state.
