GEORGE TOWN, Oct 15 – A group of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) researchers have designed a fuel-saving device which can reduce the use of petrol and diesel by up to 45 per cent. Head researcher of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Assoc Prof Dr Soib Taib said the product design was based on the electrolysis process which is connected directly to a vehicle’s engine system for more efficient burning.
“It is a compact device made from stainless aluminum, whereby its use can repair engine airflow and optimise fuel consumption,” he told a news conference here today. He said research to produce the device known as the fuel capacitor took 10 months to complete, and was funded by a RM40,000 research grant. Using the device for 20,000km a year is estimated to be able to save up to RM1,300, based on the current fuel prices, he said.
“The device also reduces smoke emission and unwanted gas such as carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide, helping to reduce air pollution,” said Soib. He said the device was suitable for lorries, cars and motorcycles with a cost of RM350 and has a lifespan of up to three years. He added that the device prototype was in the process of branding and they are ready to work with the industry on commercialising the product at a competitive price.
