GEORGE TOWN, Oct 21 – A spike in dengue cases reported within a month in Penang has raised concern from the state health authority. Penang recorded 1,821 dengue cases from Jan to Oct 18 compared to 1,598 cases from Jan to Sept 27. State Agriculture, Agro-based Industry, Rural Development and Health Committee chairman Dr Afif Bahardin said over a two-fold increase in dengue cases were reported compared to the same period last year.

Dr Afif said there had been five deaths reported as of Oct 18 compared to four fatalities for the whole of 2013. “There are 16 dengue hotspots in the state and the situations are under control. “The highest number of dengue cases detected is in Kampung Perlis, Seberang Perai Utara district and we have yet to contain the situation,” he said in a statement today. Dr Afif urged district health offices and local authorities to organise ‘gotong-royong’ to eliminate mosquito breeding grounds.
