KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 28 – Universiti Malaya (UM) has lodged a police report alleging its grounds had been trespassed and an illegal gathering had been held at the campus last night. UM Media and Corporate Unit head Izzad Zalman Abd Kader, security director Yusof Harun and security officer Khairul Anuar Abu Shari lodged the report at the Pantai Police Station here at 11am.
Izzad Zalman told reporters later that those who participated in the gathering had barged into UM, causing the main gate to collapse, and held a rally at Dataran Dewan Tunku Canselor. “The gathering was held illegally at Dataran Dewan Tunku Canselor. “Nobody can intrude or hold an event without securing UM’s permission first.”
He also said UM would conduct an internal investigation on its students who were involved in the gathering last night under the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 and the constitution of the university. “The results of the inquiry will be announced via a media statement soon.”
In the incident, about 300 youths, including students from the higher learning institution, barged through UM’s main gate at 9.20pm to attend a talk by opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, which was purportedly scheduled at the hall. The programme did not obtain the prior approval of the university and its security unit had locked the main gate.
