PUTRAJAYA, Oct 31 – Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy 2 appeal at the Federal Court began Tuesday with submissions by defence counsels Datuk Seri Gopal Sri Ram and N. Surendran.
The hearing continued on Wednesday with Surendran wrapping up his submission, followed by submissions for the defence by Sangeet Kaur Deo and Ramkarpal Singh Deo. Ramkarpal wrapped up his submission yesterday and the court adjourned for the day during lunch break. The hearing continues today with lead prosecutor Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah delivering his submission.
The five-member Federal Court bench is headed by Chief Justice Tun Arifin Zakaria and include Court of Appeal president Tan Sri Md Raus Sharif, Federal Court judges Tan Sri Abdull Hamid Embong, Tan Sri Suriyadi Halim Omar and Datuk Ramly Ali. Anwar is looking to overturn the conviction of the Court of Appeal for sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan which came with a five-year-jail sentence. Meanwhile, the prosecution team is appealing for a longer jail term, stating earlier that five years was insufficient.
