KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 1 – The remains of Puan Sri Siti Amirah Kusuma, the last Malaysian victim of the Malaysian Airlines (MAS) Flight MH17 tragedy yet to be accounted for, have been identified. Siti Amirah, 83, was the step-grandmother of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein.

The information was conveyed by Hishammuddin Saturday after forensics experts in the Netherlands yesterday confirmed that the remains of Siti Amirah had been identified. “Thank God, the remains of all Malaysian victims in the tragedy have been identified. “This was a responsibility and pledge fulfilled by Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to the families of Malaysian victims of the tragedy (that the government would do every thing it could to identify and repatriate the remains of the victims,” he told a press conference after closing Selangor Umno’s annual convention at the Putra World Trade Centre here.

“I was informed her family wants to bury Siti Amirah’s remains in Amsterdam because she has children living there. So, there will be no more full military honours reception for her remains in Malaysia,” he added. The development brings closure pertaining to the identification of the remains of all the 43 Malaysians who perished in the tragedy.

Flight MH17 crashed in eastern Ukraine on July 17 as it was flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur with 283 passengers and 15 crew on board. The Boeing 777-200 aircraft is believed to have been shot down over the troubled country. So far, the remains of 278 of the victims have been identified by forensics experts at the Military Medical Centre in Hilversum, The Netherlands, where the remains of the victims were brought to from the crash site. Hishammuddin said Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai was following up on the tragedy to ensure the families of the victims get justice.
