Brunei Sultan Conferred Honorary Doctorate In Law
GEORGE TOWN, Nov 5 – The Sultan of Brunei, Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah was Wednesday awarded an honorary Doctor of Law degree at Universiti Sains Malaysia’s (USM) 50th convocation held at its Dewan Tuanku Syed Putra (DTSP), here. It was presented by the university’s chancellor, the Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Syed Putra Jamalullail.
In his speech after receiving the award, the Brunei Sultan said he regarded the award as an honour for him and for the people of Brunei which could serve as a catalyst towards efforts to enhance existing relations between Brunei and Malaysia. He hoped to see education cooperation among the two countries continued to be enhanced, like by having student exchange programme. “Brunei always welcome Malaysians to further their studies in Brunei. “Brunei, like Malaysia, also emphasises education in line with Vision Brunei 2035 to have educated citizens and produce a knowledgeable and credible work force,” the sultan said.
Also present at the first session of today’s convocation ceremony were the Raja Perempuan of Perlis Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Tengku Abdul Rashid, the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Penang Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas and wife, Toh Puan Majimor Shariff, Second Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh and Perlis Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azlan Man. A total of 5,472 graduates would receive their scrolls during this year’s convocation, to be held in nine sessions, from Wednesday until Nov 9.
