PUTRAJAYA, Nov 6 – Supporters of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan gathered in front of the Palace of Justice, here, Thursday. They were there as the Federal Court was hearing Anwar’s final appeal to set aside his sodomy conviction and five-year jail sentence imposed by the Court of Appeal on March 7 this year after it had overturned a High Court decision to acquit Anwar.
Both sides had about 50 supporters each and police separated them by putting up a barricade to avoid any untoward incident. Both groups held placards and banners, while some were reading the Yasin. At Thursday’s proceeding, the defence was replying to the prosecution’s submission.
The Court of Appeal had found Anwar, 67, guilty of having sodomised Mohd Saiful, 27, at Unit 11-5-1 of the Desa Damansara Condominium in Jalan Setiakasih, Bukit Damansara, between 3.10pm and 4.30pm on June 26, 2008. The defence is seeking to free the opposition leader from the sodomy conviction while the prosecution wants the Federal Court to dismiss Anwar’s appeal to overturn his conviction and jail sentence.
