GEORGE TOWN, Nov 10 – Penang State Legislative Assembly opposition leader Datuk Jahara Hamid today questioned the expenditure of the state government which has increased 213 per cent during the DAP administration. While calling on the state government to explain the increase in the state’s expenditure since 2008 until now, Jahara said the expenditure figures were the same each year.
“Provision of emoluments, estimated operating expenditure of everything from A to Z is the same. So is the management of the chief minister’s office. This, I do not understand, because Air Putih assemblyman (Lim Guan Eng) is an accountant. Can a state have the same budget each year… the same figures. “But in the application of the budget proposal, it’s not the same.
So, I think this is demonstrating incompetence of the chief minister’s office,” she said when debating the Supply Bill 2015 in the state assembly, here Monday. Last Friday, Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng tabled a deficit budget of RM230.31 million next year with operating expenditure amounting to RM887.24 million against expected revenue of RM656.93 million
Jahara said the increase was almost four times the expenditure of the state government from RM270 million in 2007 to RM832 million in 2013 does not reflect the Penang government’s adherence to the principle of competency, accountability and transparency (CAT). She also wanted to know why the state government had assigned 60 people as staff in the chief minister’s office now, compared with 15 before. Jahara also questioned the dwindling stock of land in the state, which she considered very alarming, and which should be given attention and clarification by the chief minister.
