KOTA KINABALU,Nov 16 – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, has assured the government would review the proposal to make Sabah Sabah Ports in park near here as a transhipment hub east Malaysia. He said the matter would be considered as it can also address the issue of payment of freight transportation in the state.
“To be like Port Klang, Sabah must be productive. But let us (the government) to study the proposal (about Sabah Port as a hub for east),” he said when opening the 25th General Assembly of the Liberal Democratic Party here today. Prime Minister was responding to suggestions LDP president Datuk Teo Chee Kang to raise the status of Sabah to be on par with the Port Klang.
Najib also assured that the government would study the pricing of the payment of freight transport in Sabah that most businesses in the country blame the implementation of the cabotage policy. Policies established to protect local shipping companies but many businesses declare it raises the price difference between goods peninsula and Sabah and Sarawak.
“The amount may not the reason. But if the local shipping companies set prices, they are the problem,” he said. Earlier in his speech, Teo, who is also Minister of Special Duties Sabah, said Sabah Ports can stimulate economic growth in the eastern region. He said this because Kota Kinabalu near economic powerhouse in east China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Japan, as well as in East Asia Growth Area Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and Philippines (BIMP-EAGA).
