KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 21 – With Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali stepping in to give Paws Animal Welfare Society (Paws) a new lease of life, the association hopes to get a strategic and easily accessible new location for its shelter. Shelter manager Edward Lim when met by The Rakyat Post today said a land size of a minimum of two to three acres would be ideal for the 600 or so animals in the shelter.
“However, at the moment we are uncertain as to where we’re going to be located as talks are ongoing between Azmin’s side and Sime Darby to identify alternative land for us to relocate to.” Paws, which shelters 260 dogs and 280 cats, was slapped with a 14-day eviction notice on Nov 10 and asked to move from its current location after the piece of land belonging to Sime Darby was surrendered to the state for the LRT construction.
However the eviction notice was cancelled following Azmin’s intervention, to which Lim expressed his gratitude. “I can’t thank Azmin enough for his swift action to rescue this 28-year-old shelter,” Lim said his main concern is to ensure that the new shelter would provide adequate facilities for the animals, including a proper drainage system, clean water and electricity.
However, when asked on the targeted funds, Lim who has been in charge of the shelter for close to 11-years, was unable to provide a figure but is open to receiving funds. This, he explained, was because they had absolutely no idea where they were going to be relocated to. “It would be an injustice if I state a figure without being told of the area we’re being relocated to.” The priority, as always, was to ensure more Malaysians adopt the animals according to Lim.
The shelter has been receiving animal adopters from Subang Jaya, Shah Alam, Puchong and Petaling Jaya. “I just pray that we’re transferred to a strategic and accessible location.” Those interested can send their contributions to CIMB Account No: 1216-0010633-053 under the account name of: PAWS Animal Welfare Society. Paws also warned the public to not make donations to any third party as Paws had not established any collaboration with any party yet regarding raising funds.
