GEORGE TOWN, Nov 24 – A total of 13,000 companies in Penang has registered for the Goods and Services Tax (GST) up to Nov 20 compared with the earlier target of 10,000 companies. Deputy Director II, Penang Customs Department, Chan Tek Kai said the department expected the number of registrations for GST to rise by the Dec 31 deadline.
“The number (of registrations) is very encouraging based on the awareness on GST, and other programmes that were implemented by the Customs Department and several government agencies comprehensively. “If this momentum continues, I am confident more companies will register for GST by year-end,” he told reporters after a luncheon talk organised by Penang Information Department here today.
The programme was officiated by Penang Information Department Director Ishak Abdullah. Meanwhile, Ishak in his speech said his department would continue with the briefing programmes on the GST to the rakyat especially at the grassroots level in order to provide the correct explanation on the tax. “Based on feedback on the programmes, we find that many people are starting to understand what is GST and how it is being implemented,” he said.
