KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 25 – Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi respects the criticism and suggestions made by former Umno president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad. Dr Mahathir in a blog post today, urged 2014 Umno General Assembly delegates to criticise their leaders if they found reason to. Ahmad Zahid said delegates were free to criticise their leaders provided they did not go overboard and remained ethical.

“I think we respect Tun Dr Mahathir’s thoughts but there must always be guidelines for delegates when they speak. This is not to control them, but just to guide them so they avoid making any sensitive statements. “We can give our views and we can have different thoughts, but we have to mind our manners,” he said during a press conference at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) lobby here today, on the sidelines of Umno’s 2014 General Assembly.

He said the delegates were free to air their views, but were advised not to touch on sensitive topics that could threaten national harmony. “I respect any view from leaders or ex-leaders of Umno. But we must be careful when we touch on religious, racial or cultural topics.”
