No Entry To Sabah? No Problem For Ambiga As There Is Skype
KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 26 – The entry ban did not stop Negara-Ku patron Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan from addressing a forum in Sabah last night via Skype. The prominent lawyer had addressed a crowd of 150 people at a roadshow —part of Negara-Ku’s nationwide campaign to “reclaim Malaysia” — in Kota Kinabalu through the video chat software.
“I suppose you could say we beat the oppression using technology!” Ambiga quipped when contacted by The Rakyat Post today via a text message. “It also shows how meaningless such bans are as you cannot stop information flow in this day and age.” The prominent lawyer was recently declined entry by the Sabah Immigration Department, through a letter received on Nov 15, preventing her from speaking at a nationwide roadshow organised by the coalition.
The forum is part of the roadshow which began on Nov 12 in Malacca and is set to also cover five other states — Perak, Johor, Negri Sembilan, Penang and Kuala Lumpur. In slamming the state authorities, Ambiga said technology came to her rescue and allowed her to express the need for the nation to return to rationality, allow for open and civil discussions, moderation and harmony.
“I may not have been on Sabah soil, but I crossed the seas with technology! “The authorities need to get real.” Ambiga is set to file for a judicial review on her entry ban in Sabah through a lawyer based in the state. Consisting of 60 NGOs, Negara-Ku is led by its patrons national laureate Datuk A. Samad Said and former vice-chairman of the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) Tan Sri Simon Sipaun.
