Long Term Measures To Stop Floods In Lower Perak

TELUK INTAN, Nov 30 – The Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) should carry out a study to address the issue of flood hitting Lower Perak district. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir said a study was needed as plans that had been identified could be implemented to avoid the recurrence of floods.

“Among the methods identified are deepening of Sungai Bidor and building a good quality embankment that is higher than the river water level,” he said after visiting flood victims at the Sekolah Kebangsaan Changkat Jong here. He however noted the proposed measures needed bigger allocations.

Zambry added floods in Lower Perak district here were not only due to river water spillage from the district itself but also due to those rivers downstream in the Batang Padang district. “The allocation from DID alone is insufficient to ensure it can be implemented in a comprehensive way. We want to do it on a long-term basis and not only when it floods,” he said.

The latest incident was the second to hit Changkat Jong area within two weeks after the banks of the Sungai Bidor broke due to heavy rain and water spillage to settlement areas. As of 6pm, a total of 192 victims were still staying at the school.
