BUTTERWORTH, Jan 9 – A Penang ferry on its way from the Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal here to Pengkalan Raja Tun Uda, George Town had to turn back after its engine broke down at 10.30am Friday. A spokesman for the ferry operator said its crew found the engine room to be filled with smoke about 10 minutes after departure.
“The smoke could be seen from both terminals but it was not due to a fire,” he said. He said there were about 300 passengers on board including those using the car deck. “The ferry returned to the terminal on its own power and the passengers and vehicles were transferred onto another ferry to continue their journey,” he said, adding that the smoke came from the engine and that checks were underway to find out why it malfunctioned.
