KUCHING, Jan 19 – The flood situation in Sarawak is expected to worsen with more people being evacuated to higher grounds due to continuous heavy rain. And the next cycle of the seasonal King Tide phenomenon, which is expected to begin this week, will compound the situation.

As at 7am today, more than 2,000 people have been relocated to 21 relief centres around the state, mostly in Kuching. A State Fire and Rescue Department spokesman said evacuation process is ongoing and the number of flood victims is expected to increase. The wet spell has also forced 33 schools to close.  A State Education Department spokesman said some of the schools were closed after it has been turned into evacuation centres.
