PUTRAJAYA, Jan 22 – MIC deputy president Datuk Seri Dr S.Subramaniam is adamant about meeting party president Datuk Seri G.Palanivel to discuss the future of two branches, which would be defunct, if re-elections are not held by Jan 30. “The president just came back from overseas today.
I will take all efforts to meet with him to solve this problem,” he said when asked to comment on the status of the branches – Merlimau Utara and Rumah Pangsa Pekeliling Selatan – which had been ordered to hold fresh polls within 30 days. Subramaniam was speaking to reporters after his ministry’s post-cabinet meeting here Wednesday.

It was earlier reported that Subramaniam’s request to meet Palanivel did not materialise in the need to find a holistic solution to the problem, in line with the decision of the Registrar of Societies (RoS). Yesterday MIC vice-president Datuk M. Saravanan said the branch election issue had yet to be solved although the deadline was only 10 days away.

On Dec 5, the RoS had ordered the MIC to hold fresh elections for the three vice-president posts and 23 central working committee (CWC) seats within 90 days after finding irregularities in the election held during the 68th MIC General Meeting in Melaka on Nov 30, 2013.

The ROS had also ordered the party to hold new elections for eight divisions namely Bayan Baru, Bukit Gelugor, Subang, Bandar Baru Kulim, Taiping, Tambun, Sepang and Jasin, within 60 days as well as to hold re-elections for Batu Kawan (deputy chairman post), Kota Raja (division chairman post), Tanjung Malim (division chairman post) and Taman Koperasi Polis (branch chairman post) within 30 days.

Two branches – Merlimau Utara and Rumah Pangsa Pekeliling Selatan – will also hold re-elections, within 30 days. The RoS had advised the party to not hold its annual general meeting until the matter was resolved.
