GEORGE TOWN, Jan 26 – With Thaipusam approaching early next month, the coconut supply in Penang is said to have reduced, triggering a price hike. A coconut wholesaler in Lorong Aboo Sittee here lamented she obtained a lesser supply of coconuts this year, from plantations in Sitiawan and Kuala Bernam in Perak, due to the current rainy season which resulted in the trees producing less fruits.

As a result, P. Sarasvathy, 56, said the situation had forced her regular supplier in Sitiawan to seek additional coconut supply from Kelantan. However, the delivery (of the coconuts) was delayed, following recent floods in Kelantan. “I was only able to distribute 30,000 coconuts for Thaipusam this year, as compared to 150,000 last year while orders during normal times is between about 90,000 to 100,000 coconuts per month.
