BUKIT MERTAJAM, Feb 8 – Penang Umno is ready with its plan and strategy for a possible Permatang Pauh by-election if opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim loses his sodomy appeal on Tuesday. State Umno liaison committee chairman Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman said the step is taken to ensure it would not be ‘an easy win’ for any candidates from the Pakatan coalition.
“We will respect the court’s decision, if he (Anwar) is convicted, then our machinery is ready,” he told reporters after chairing the state Umno meeting at Summit Hotel here today. On Tuesday, the Federal Court will deliver its verdict on Anwar’s appeal for sodomising his former aide Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan in 2008.
On a different note, Zainal said Penang Umno was also monitoring prices of goods and services following the drop of fuel prices through its Youth and Wanita wings. “We have tasked them to go and conduct frequent checks on errant retailers refusing to decrease the price of their goods and services. “These irresponsible people will be identified reported to the relevant authorities,” he added.
