KOTA BHARU, FEB 12 – PAS Spiritual Leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat died tonight at age 84. PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali confirmed the matter when contacted. Former Kelantan MB, died at his residence in Pulau Melaka, Kota Bharu at 9.45pm.  He was brought back to the residence of Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) Kubang Kerian at 8:40 tonight. Nik Abduh in writing on Facebook this afternoon, said his father’s health deteriorated after overnight treatment of ulcers.

Former chief minister, who was also suffering from prostate cancer admitted to the hospital on 19 January. Level health deteriorated when the great flood swept the country. His son, Pasir Mas Member of Parliament Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul, posted on Twitter and Facebook just  a few hours ago that his health had deteriorated further after being treated for an ulcer last night. Nik Abdul Aziz was born in 1931 at Pulau Melaka, Kelantan. He’s married to Tuan Sabariah Tuan Ishak and has 10 children, 5 sons and 5 daughters.

He spent most of his schooling life in pondok schools in Kelantan and Terengganu, where he began his Islamic studies. He continued his Islamic education at Deoband University, Uttar Pradesh in India in 1952 and then went to Lahore, Pakistan to study Ilmu Tafsir Quran. Nik Aziz carries a Bachelor of Arts in Arabic Studies and a Master of Arts in Islamic jurisprudence from Al-Azhar University.

The multilingual spiritual leader—who speaks Malay, English, Tamil, Urdu and Arabic—got his popular nickname “Tok Guru” from having been a teacher at various religious schools in Kelantan. His political career began when he joined PAS in 1967. In the same year, he contested and won the Kelantan Hilir (now Pengkalan Chepa) parliamentary seat by-election, holding the seat until 1986. When PAS lost the Kelantan state elections in 1978, Nik Aziz, as PAS state commissioner, started questioning president Asri Muda’s leadership before the latter was forced to resign in the party’s general assembly the same year.

Nik Aziz went on to become Menteri Besar (MB) of Kelantan and succeeded Yusof Rawa as spiritual leader of PAS in 1991. After 23 years of service, he stepped down as state MB following the 13th General Elections. During his time, Nik Aziz drew much criticism for his views on Islam and his moves to impose Islamic law and rule upon the Muslims in Malaysia
