Woman Crushed To Death By Container In Penang



GEORGE TOWN, Feb 12 – A physically-disabled woman was killed instantly at a bus stop in Air Itam here when a parked 32.5 tonne container toppled on her. P’ng Eow Hong, 48, who had “short leg syndrome”, a disability since birth, was waiting at the bus stop opposite the Air Itam post office when the incident took place at 3.10pm today. A team of rescue workers from the Paya Terubong Fire and Rescue Department rushed to scene after receiving calls from passers-by.

“We gathered that the container had been parked there for the past 24 hours. “It contained bed frames,” said a department spokesperson. Police are investigating how the parked container toppled. Rescue workers took 40 minutes to extricate the victim’s body. The body of P’ng, who was from Jalan P. Ramlee, has been sent to the Penang Hospital mortuary for a post -mortem.
