Call To Abolish By-Elections – Pahang Youth Council

KUANTAN, Feb 17 – Pahang State Youth Council suggests that the government abolishes the by-election system in order to save the government’s finances and not to waste the time and energy of all stakeholders. Council president, Khairul Amin Osman hoped the government would study the proposal in line with the times and the importance of service to the community.

“The abolishment of the by-election system will not only save the government allocations but people will also not get dragged into the arena of political campaigns with some forced to take leave and become part of the party machinery canvassing for votes when all campaigns have been undertaken during the General Elections earlier,” he said in a statement Monday.

He also suggested the incumbent party which had won the Legislative Assembly (DUN) and Parliament seat concerned may submit a new candidate to fill the vacancy in office until the next general election. If the seat was won by an independent then the prime minister or the Menteri Besar will determine a replacement candidate for the vacancy.

Therefore, he suggested, there was no need for a by-election to be held for the Chempaka state seat, left vacant after the death of former Kelantan menteri besar Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, and the Permatang Pauh parliamentary seat left empty following Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s sodomy conviction.
