Dengue Cases In Penang Rise By 208.84 Per Cent



GEORGETOWN, Feb 18 – The number of dengue cases in Penang rose by 208.84 per cent to 908 cases as at Feb 14, compared to 294 cases reported in the corresponding period last year. State agriculture, agro-based industry, rural development and health committee chairman Dr Afif Bahardin said the number of deaths however, remained the same, at two cases.

“A total of 25 localities where the disease is under control has been reported in Penang,” he said in a statement here today. He said in the northeast district, the outbreak-controlled localities were at Kuarters Polis Fasa 2; Greelane Height Apartments; Jalan Khaw Sim Bee; Jalan Logan; Lengkok Dumbar; Lintang Macallum; Solok Besi; Solok Dunlop; Sri Saujana Apartments; Taman Pinang; Lebuh Rambai; Taman Sri Sari; Fettes Park and Uda Flats.

In the southwest district, the outbreak-controlled localities were at Lintang Bukit Kecil and Taman Sri Acres, while in the Seberang Perai Utara (SPU) district, it was Taman Limbungan Kapal. The outbreak-controlled localities in Seberang Perai Tengah (SPT) were Taman Kimsar; Taman Bukit Kecil; Permatang Tinggi; Taman Permata; Taman Selamat and Taman Machang Bubok.

In Seberang Perai Selatan (SPS), the areas are Taman Sri Aman and Valdor village. Dr Afif said, eight uncontrolled-outbreak localities had also been identified, namely Desa Green and Jalan Haji Hashim Imam in the northeast district; Livinia Apartments (southwest); Solok Tenggiri; Lorong Tuna Flats; Taman Budiman (SPT); Taman Molek (SPU) and Jalan Batas Ban (SPS).

He said the state health department had also identified six ‘hotspot’ locations, namely Taman Free School and Mewah Court in southwest district; Pearl View Chai Leng; Lengkok Inderawasih; Lorong Kota Permai; and, Machang Bubok village in the SPT district. Therefore, Dr Afif reminded the people to continue taking precautionary measures, including checking for and destroying possible Aedes breeding grounds every week.
