KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 18 – MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said he would like to see unprecedented solidarity in politics demonstrated through moderation for the sake of the country’s future generation. This is one of his three wishes for the year ahead – the other two being to see a breakthrough in the economy for sustainable national development and further strengthening of education to nurture more talents for Malaysia.
In his Chinese New Year message, Liow who is also Transport Minister, called on Malaysians to learn to respect each other and to avoid using words that hurt. In dealing with interracial relations, he said, sincerity was the single most effective formula to enhance brotherhood. “Bear in mind that in this information technology era, we must exercise even more self-discipline in uttering words to prevent unnecessary racial distrust and public uproar,” he said.
Liow noted that moderation and a strong stance against extremism was the only way possible for multiracial Malaysia to continue as a progressive and peaceful nation. The party chief also took the opportunity to urge Malaysians to remain united amid the uncertain world economic outlook due to the declining oil price which has equally affected Malaysia.
