112 Killed In Road Accidents Over 8 Days

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 21 – A total of 112 fatalities were reported during the first eight days of this year’s Ops Selamat, implemented on Feb 12. Bukit Aman traffic police chief Datuk Mohd Fuad Abdul Latif said 110 fatal accidents were reported during Ops Selamat. There were 10,023 accidents during this period. Most of those killed in the accidents were motorcyclists, followed by those in cars.

He said 146,855 summonses were issued during the eight days to offenders who exceeded the speed limit, drove in the emergency lanes, jumped queues, crossed double lines as well as for red light violations. Mohd Fuad also said that during this period, police made 31,402 visits to the houses left empty during the Chinese New Year festive season.

“We received a total of 4,972 reports from members of the public who wanted to notify and ask police to monitor their homes while they were away. “We ask that more residents come forward to the nearest police station to inform them if their houses are empty to avoid any untoward incidents,” he said in a statement yesterday.
