GEORGE TOWN, Feb 24 – Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has been issued yet another summon for illegal parking, this time in King Street and it is the fourth so far. Lim admitted in a press conference that the summons issued by Penang Municipal Council (MPPP) was received by his driver, Rozali Ishak yesterday after a photo of the vehicle parked at the street junction next to a fire hydrant went viral while he was waiting Chief Minister from his Chinese New Year function at the Penang Chinese Town Hall.

The summons, which stated “Not parked in designated area” at 1.15pm on Sunday, was addressed to the tuan punya kereta (vehicle owner).  Rozali, 53, who was also present at the press conference, said he turned into King Street when he could not find a parking spot after dropping Lim off for a function at the Penang Chinese Chamber of Commerce on Penang Street.

“While I stopped there to wait, someone took a photo of the vehicle. However, I was in the car the whole time,” said Rozali, who has been working as a driver for the past 15 years. Lim said Rozali, who also used to drive other state executive councillors before becoming his driver in 2008, had a good record.

“As I had announced earlier, MPPP should not hesitate to issue the summons, which they did. Rozali never had any issue when he was working for other executive councillors – it is only when he became my driver that he is in the news,” Lim said jokingly. Several blogs and a Malay daily had also highlighted the incident.

This is the fourth time that Lim’s official car was said to be illegally or inappropriately parked. Last July, the car made news when it was photographed at a no-parking zone at a shopping mall in Jalan Datuk Keramat here. However, Lim said the mall management had told his driver that he could park there.

In August, the car was found illegally parked in Campbell Street, while in November, someone posted on the MPPP Watch Facebook page about the same car being parked on a bicycle lane in front of the Hin Bus Depot on Jalan Gurdwara.
