KUALA LUMPUR, March 13 – Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said Isis Malaysia had been widely known by the people within and outside the country for its important role in organising various activities since its inception on April 8, 1983. “The government is aware that the acronym Isis is being widely used by certain groups to refer to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria. It is public knowledge that the acronym ISIS is widely used by the western media.
“However, the Arab countries use the term Daesh, as the acronym for the ‘Islamic State in Iraq and Syria’ and in the Arabic language it sounds similar to what is meant as ‘Crushing Something Underfoot’,” he said when replying to a question from Datuk Norah Abd Rahman (BN-Tanjong Manis) at the Dewan Rakyat sitting yesterday. Norah had asked on the stand of the government whether to change the name of Isis Malaysia to another name as the acronym Isis was now frequently referred to as the violent activities carried out by the militant group. – Bernama
