KUALA LUMPUR, March 16 – The police must stop the violation of the right to assemble and honour the Federal Constitution says PAS Youth chief Suhaizan Kaiat, DAP Socialist Youth (DAPSY) chief Teo Kok Seong and PKR Youth chief Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. The trio appealed to the Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) to stop the arrests of anyone connected to the #KitaLawan rally on March 7. They said the arrests of opposition leaders and non-governmental organisation (NGO) members contravened the rights to peaceful assembly guaranteed by the Federal Constitution.
“We were all arrested under Section 9(5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) and Section 143 of the Penal Code, which were recklessly used to threaten, bully, scare and inconvenience us. “We strongly oppose using this Act as a sort of manipulation of the law to legitimise their political bosses,” they said. They asked for all detainees connected with the #KitaLawan rally to be immediately released.
“We along with the NGO members are youth of an independent nation that respects the law of the land and do not deserve to be treated like criminals. “We stand by our stand to honour principle and justice as well as fight for the oppressed.” They said that they will not stop with the rallies as long as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak does not step down following the 1MDB scandal and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim is freed from jail.
