KOTA BARU, March 18 – Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob tabled the amendments to the Shariah Criminal Code Enactment II 1993 at the state assembly meeting today. He proposed to amend the enactment shortly after 11am, after the assembly took a break. His proposal was seconded by deputy menteri besar Datuk Mohd Amar Nik Abdullah. Ahmad said the state government remained committed to implement hudud in Kelantan despite the long delay after the enactment was passed in 1993.

Also present at the assembly is new Pas spiritual leader Datuk Dr Haron Din. Under the amendments, hudud is only applicable on Muslims of age who commit offences in Kelantan. The clause on the option for non-Muslims to be tried under syariah or civil laws is repealed. The Hudud bill also provides for takzir or corporal punishment on sodomy between husband and wife. Hassan Mohamood (Pas-Tawang) is the first assemblyman to debate the bill, followed by Kok Lanas assemblyman Datuk Mohd Alwi Che Ahmad.
