KUALA LUMPUR, March 23 – Human rights lawyer and Lawyers for Liberty executive director Eric Paulsen, who was detained last night under the Sedition Act 1948, was released today on police bail. Lawyers for Liberty’s legal coordinator, Michelle Yesudas, was also detained and released today on police bail today over her own Twitter postings.
Kuala Lumpur CID chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Zainuddin Ahmad said Paulsen was remanded at the Jinjang police lock-up and released around 3.30pm today. “This case is being investigated by the Bukit Aman Classified Crimes Investigation Unit,” he said.
Paulsen was detained yesterday in relation to two statements regarding hudud law on Twitter and was investigated by Bukit Aman police under Section 4(1)(c) of the Sedition Act 1948. He was detained at Dataran Merdeka last night although the remand period was not extended.
