KUALA LUMPUR, April 5 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be released temporarily from the Sungai Buloh Prison to visit the remains of his father who passed away this morning, according to PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail. Anwar’s father, Datuk Ibrahim Abdul Rahman, died at 1.45am today.
“Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, insya’allah, will be permitted by the [Prisons Department] at 11am to visit his late father in Kajang,” Anwar’s wife posted on Facebook this morning. Dr Wan Azizah earlier said Ibrahim will be buried today at the Sungai Ramal Muslim cemetery following the Zohor prayers, and his remains are currently at the family home in Country Heights, Kajang.
Ibrahim was a former Umno lawmaker who had served as Seberang Prai Central MP from 1959 to 1969. He had also been the parliamentary secretary of the Health Ministry from 1964 to 1969. Anwar is currently serving a five-year jail sentence after the Federal Court on February 10 upheld his conviction for sodomising a former aide.
