KUALA LUMPUR, April 20 – Malaysia Airlines (MAS) said its revised excess baggage fee structure will come into effect on April 22. Previously applied regional rates per blocks of 5kg will be replaced with a zonal fee structure, with rates per block of 3kg for travel on all MAS-operated flights system-wide, both domestic and international.

Excess baggage rates will be calculated based on zones, depending on the distance flown in a single itinerary. “The fee will be calculated for every 3kg in excess of the Free Baggage Allowance, instead of the previous 5kg blocks,” it said in a statement today. According to MAS’ website, its fixed rate for each block of 5kg varies from RM55 within Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak to a maximum of RM195 to Europe.

This revision will also apply to passengers connecting on domestic routes between Sabah and Sarawak on MASwings-operated flights, it said, adding passengers with tickets issued before April 22, 2015 will be charged based on whichever rate is lower if they are travelling on April 22-Aug 30, 2015.

MAS currently allows two pieces of baggage weighing 50kg for First Class, 40kg for Business and 30kg for Economy Class. For further clarification, call the Malaysia Airlines Contact Centre at 1-300-88-3000 (within Malaysia) or 603-7843 3000 (outside Malaysia) or visit www.malaysiaairlines.com.
