PERMATANG PAUH, April 27 – Pertubuhan Ummah Sejahtera Malaysia (Pasma) is certain that PKR candidate Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail will be able to defend the Permatang Pauh seat in the by-election Pasma Penang chairman Zolkifly Md Lazim said the by-election set for May 7 would only strengthen Dr Wan Azizah’s position as the Opposition leader. “I feel its not a question of winning or losing. Winning is a certainty. “We are talking about who will be the Opposition leader and (possibly) lead the government,” he said when caught up with him. DAP chief whip Anthony Loke had said earlier that the decision on who would be the Opposition leader would only be decided after the Permatang Pauh by-election.
The Permatang Pauh seat was declared vacant when its incumbent Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was disqualified following the Pardons Board’s rejection of a royal pardon he sought for the five-year jail sentence due to his sodomy conviction against his personal assistant, Saiful Bukhairi Azlan. Dr Wan Azizah, who is also the Kajang assemblywoman, had contested and won the Permatang Pauh seat in 1999 after Anwar was convicted for the same offence. She was the MP for two terms, but resigned to allow Anwar to contest in a by-election.
