PERMATANG PAUH, May 1 – A PKR member is calling for Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan to resign after failing to keep his promise to exempt mobile prepaid cards from the Goods and Services Tax (GST) within a month. Bayan Baru Member of Parliament Sim Tze Tzin said the prepaid card fiasco concerned 60% of mobile phone users in the nation, who included youths, retirees and housewives.
“He failed to handle the issue and this failure also reflects on the Federal Government. So now he should step down to show that he is truly a man,” said Sim in a press conference at Yayasan Aman here today. Sim also said the tax collected from these cards were between RM80 and RM120 million a year.
Meanwhile, PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar said the difference of opinion between Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek and Ahmad in the prepaid card fiasco showed a rift between the two Cabinet Ministers. She said this was a serious failure as the government had repeatedly said that everyone was ready for the implementation.
