GEORGETOWN, May 9 – Straits Quay Retail Marina hosted a Lighthouse Design Competition today. Participants were challenged to re-design the iconic lighthouse following the selected theme in conjunction with Around The World @ Straits Quay event.
Each participants were given a model of the iconic lighthouse and were given a total of 2 hours to redesign the lighthouse with their creativity according to the selected theme. The given themes were Korea, China, London, Japan, Italy and USA. Participants were given the flexibility to pick their favourite theme and re-design the white lighthouse to resemble the selected country.
All preparations were done on the spot. Patrons get to see the making of each lighthouse. There were many elements involved from Sakura trees to represent Japan to London’s famous telephone booth standing next to a colourful lighthouse. Within the two hours, all participants managed to complete the design according to the theme.
The best lighthouse design won the cash prize of RM500 while the first and second runner up walked away with cash prize RM300 and RM200 each. All 3 consolation prize winners won RM80 each. The winner list as stated below :

– Second Prize : Joleen Lee
– Third Prize : Lok Ying Ying
The decorated lighthouses will be displayed around the mall to promote the upcoming event Around The World @ Straits Quay which will be held on 6 and 7 June. This event is to create an around the world experience for families and friends. Visitors will get to enjoy the culture, food and performances of the 6 countries during the 2-day event. The lucky draw winner of a trip to Beijing will also be announced during the event.
