GEORGETOWN, May 13 – The sixth annual George Town Festival will make its return to Penang 1 – 31 August 2015, featuring a brilliant selection of critically acclaimed performances from around the world as well as several local initiatives that showcase the city and its people, and share its wonderful spaces.
“We’re thrilled to be bringing in a number of Asian, ASEAN and Malaysian premieres from internationally renowned performers including Spain’s Titanium and Australia’s Am I”, commented Festival Director Joe Sidek. “This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity for both local and international festivalgoers to witness world-class theatre and dance amidst GeorgeTown’s unique backdrop.”
The Festival will bring a goal flavour to the heritage city while keeping the spotlight firmly fixed on the local community and the vibrant spaces of George Town, as it has always done in the past. The city itself will take centre stage in three community-driven events.
“100% Penang, one of our most anticipated shows this year, will feature 100 local citizens – each representing 1% of the population – coming together to form a human pie chart of Penang. They’ll share with the audience their stories, their opinions and their personalities, and give us a tangible insight into what makes Penang such a special place”, Mr Sidek continued.
Butterworth Fringe Festival, or BFF will ferry the festivities over to the mainland with a weekend of cutting-edge performances and activities. ATM @ Beach Street or All Things Malaysian will give festivalgoers an all-encompassing view of the best of Malaysia, from the traditional to the contemporary by pairing the country’s hottest, hippest and most exciting creative arts with the incredible atmosphere of one of the city’s most prominent heritage streets.
George Town Festival is proud to announce that Bayview Georgetown has come forward as the first hotel partner of the Festival with a sponsorship from Boon Siew Group. The Festival will continue to look for partners and sponsorships in the coming weeks. “Georgetown Town Festival has always prioritised giving back to the community by giving access to art and culture”, said Mr Sidek.
“In addition to our Friends of the Festival initiative, which allows donors to sponsor tickets for students and underprivileged citizens, we will be introducing our Community Partners initiative, which allows donors to sponsor tickets for the general community as well. We’re grateful to all of our past sponsors, partners and friends and hope to continue to draw interest into this growing cultural event.”
For one month only, starting May 18, George Town Festival will be offering an early bird promotion of 20% off all regular ticket prices.
