GEORGETOWN, Jul 3 – Malaysia Maritim Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained an Indonesian boat with five fishermen who invade to our national waters to a position of 27 nautical miles southwest of Pulau Kendi here Wednesday 4:50pm. MMEA chief enforcement of Maritim District 2 Penang, First Maritim Admiral Kamaruszaman Abu Hassan said the traditional fishing boat was detained because it was found that exercise fishing activities in the waters of the state.
“The five fisherman who arrested are using for the longline fishing are aged 30 to 56 years old. He said initial investigations revealed that an unnumbered fishing boat is based in Pantai Labu Medan, Indonesia for since five days ago. All of them have committed an offense under Fisheries Act 1985, Section 15 (1)(a) that fishing by using foreign fishing vessel in Malaysia without any permission from the Director of Fisheries,” he said at a press conference here Thursday.
Kamaruszaman said that the boat who has confiscated will be brought back to Jeti Limbungan Batu Maung. Meanwhile, the 200 kilos of various fish species and fishing gears also will be confiscated too. A fishermen who had arrested by MMEA for last 2 years ago was also the same as trespassing the waters and sentenced to six months in prison.
