BUKIT MERTAJAM, Aug 9 – Three Myanmar workers died due to the incident of the rain storm which causes the wall of the factory who under construction to collapse in Bukit Minyak here on Saturday evening. In another incident, a senior citizen was also killed by the crushed stone when he tried to escape from fallen trees in an old building in Lorong Perak, George Town.
District police Chief of Seberang Perai Tengah ACP Rusli Mohd Noor said that the incident in Bukit Minyak is the workers are being employed to build the walls of the factory before the storm and heavy rain occurred which causing it to collapse and the walls to squash on them. Besides that, there were also another Burmese worker in the group was injured and sent to hospital. The identity of the three victims, aged between 20 and 30 years have not been identified.
In the incident in George Town, Northeast district police chief, ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said the Lim Chong Leong, 59, died at the scene after suffering severe head injuries. In the 5.15pm incident, the victim was said to take shelter in old buildings may be due to heavy rain before the crushed rock, when he tried to save himself after a fallen tree.
Meanwhile, the storm had also caused hundreds of fallen trees in some areas such as the head of the Border, Freshwater Bay, Butterworth, Permatang Rawa, Bukit Mertajam, Machang Bubok, Investment constituency, Alma, Bukit Minyak, Simpang Ampat, Jos, Jelutong, Furnace and George Town.
Fire and Rescue spokesman said the incident also led to dozens of houses were torn off the roof. Among the areas affected are Bandar Perda; Taman Sejahtera Indah, Freshwater Bay; Jalan Bukit Panchor Beautiful; Passion fruit gardens, Bukit Minyak; Glam Tok ridge; Bubu loop, Sungai Dua; and Jalan Sungai Puyu. It was also reported in several camps open house organized by state assemblyman Freshwater Bay, Datuk Jahara Hamid also flown in the wind.
