PETALING JAYA, Oct 16 – Former UMNO Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah officially joined Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) on Thursday noon. This was announced by PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail in a media conference at the party’s headquarters here.
She said they are welcoming Saifuddin membership. She said it is appropriate with Keadilan’s strategy to focus on issues regarding the welfare of Malay and bumiputera communities. At the same media conference, Saifuddin who is also a former Higher Education deputy minister said his decision was motivated by the desire to see change in the country’s political arena.
“I thought long and hard before making the decision. I want to build this country through institutional change while this is not discussed comprehensively in UMNO and Barisan Nasional (BN). Untill it reached a point where I don’t feel compatible with UMNO and BN anymore,”said Saifuddin who is also a former Higher Education deputy minister.
Speculations were rife that Saifuddin was going to join PKR when he was seen attending a Pakatan 2.0 Round Table Conference to finalise the formation of the new Pakatan Harapan. However, he was reported to have explained that his presence was based on his capacity as Youth Academy chairman.
Saifuddin said he would also submit his resignation letter as Global Movement of Moderates chief executive officer to the movement’s chairman Tan Sri Razali Ismail on Monday. Meanwhile, Wan Azizah said when asked on Saifuddin’s position in PKR, that the matter would be discussed, “based on his talent and potential”. Also present were PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali and other top party leaders.
